TRICARE enrollees are assigned a Primary Care Manager (PCM). During the appointment when you have seen your PCM, he or she may decide that a specialty referral is needed for your care.
A specialty referral is the process of sending a patient to another doctor or other
qualified health care provider for services that the referring provider
cannot provide. You may be referred for specialty care in the TRICARE network or to another Military Treatment Facility. Generally, you will receive a referral authorization from HealthNet Federal Services within seven (7) to 10 business days in the mail.
Once you have received your authorization letter from TRICARE, you will have the name of the specialist you are to see, their address, how many visits are allotted to you and the date the referral expires. Your referral is usually valid for one diagnosis per specialty and expires in six (6) months or six (6) visits whichever expires first. If you do not use all the visits or the calendar date is up, your referral will need to be extended by the specialist or you will need to see your PCM for a new referral BEFORE you have another visit with the specialist.

Except in cases of medical emergencies and certain services that may be self-referred, care provided in other treatment facilities (military or non-military) or to a specialist (military or non-military) require a referral prior by the beneficiary’s PCM. Without the proper referral from your PCM, you may be financially responsible for a portion of your care.
TRICARE excludes or significantly limits the coverage for certain services. To read or get more information on these services that may not be covered or have coverage limitations check your TRICARE Prime Handbook or with your regional contractor.
